Far Rockaway, NY

93,000 sf. new three-story elementary school accommodates 650 students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The design maintains a close relationship between internal and exterior functions, including siting the outdoor athletic areas adjacent to the gymnasium and locating the early childhood play areas adjacent to the ground floor pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms. While the space planning of the school is compact, the massing and façade were designed for playful articulation and modulation of material and color. Predominant façade materials included brick in several colors, limestone, cast stone, glass brick and anodized aluminum double-hung windows.
